Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies

Ingredients

Filling

3 oz (from 8-oz package) cream cheese, softened

1/4 cup sugar

1 tablespoon Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour

1 egg, separated, yolk reserved for brownie batter

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Brownies

1 box (16 oz) Betty Crocker  Supreme original brownie mix

Water, vegetable oil, and egg called for on brownie mix box

Reserved egg yolk

1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Coat a 9-inch x 13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

2. Prepare the brownies by melting the butter in a small bowl in the microwave for about 1 minute, or in a small saucepan on low heat for about 5 minutes, swirling to melt thoroughly and browning slightly. Set aside to cool completely before continuing.

3. In a large bowl, mix the sugar and cocoa powder together, then add in the salt and baking powder and mix thoroughly. Add the beaten eggs to this mixture and stir until evenly mixed. Next, add in the flour and vanilla extract and stir until everything is evenly mixed.

4. Add in about 1/2 cup of the cooled butter mixture to this mixture, stirring it into the batter with a spoon or spatula, mixing until evenly mixed into the batter but not browned as you would when making cookies. It will be a very thick, chocolate batter.

5. Make the cream cheese swirl: In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until everything is evenly mixed and smooth.

6. Spoon dollops of this mixture on top of the brownie batter in a few places around the pan (an offset spatula works well for this), pushing them down slightly so they are in firm contact with the brownie batter below.
