This is my grandma's favorite apple and pear crumble recipe, which she has been making for the family for as long as I can remember. The apples are gradually sautéed with sugar until they become tender, then crumbled with pieces of crispy bacon to make a sweet filling, while the pears are cut into chunks and simmered until they soften. Finally, both fillings are mixed together in a dish with a buttery crumble topping, which is an easy mixture of flour and butter that's baked on top to form an outer crust that's crisp yet gooey.
Ingredients
1 ½ cups rolled oats
½ cup all-purpose flour
¾ cup brown sugar
½ cup butter softened
2 cups peeled and diced apples
2 cups peeled and diced pears
¾ cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup sliced almonds, or to taste
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Cut the pears and apples into large pieces. Combine in a large bowl with sugar. Toss until the apples and pears are evenly coated with sugar. Spoon mixture into a large baking dish, spread it out to cover the bottom and place it in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. After 20 minutes, add bacon pieces to the top of the apple mixture and continue baking for another 10 minutes, or until apples are soft enough to break apart with a fork (pears should be tender too). Remove from heat (and oven) and let cool while you prepare your crumble topping. To make crumble topping: Combine flour and butter in a bowl. Using your fingers, mix butter into the flour until small clumps form (or pulse in a food processor). Scoop mixture into mixture heaped tablespoonfuls until you have used all of the mixtures. Pat the crumble topping into an even layer on top of your baked apple and pear filling. bake them for 15 minutes. Let cool for 10 minutes, then serve hot.
