Best Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy


Ingredients

2 Tbsp. each butter and vegetable oil 

1 onion, diced

2 lbs. ground beef  

salt and pepper or other seasonings to taste 

4 cups of beef broth (or water) 

2 cups flour (heaping tablespoons)

1/4 cup beef broth (to thin up the gravy)


Directions

Put your onions into a large skillet. Cook them over medium heat until they get brown and crispy (about 10 minutes). Add some oil if needed to keep them from burning.

-Let the oil heat in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the beef, salt, and pepper, or whatever seasonings you like. Cook until it is browned on both sides (about 5 minutes). Remove it to a plate and set it aside for now.

-While your beef cooks, mix up the gravy ingredients in a separate bowl. The ratio of liquid to flour is 2:1 so you will need 4 cups liquid and 2 cups flour to make this gravy recipe.

-Add the flour to the liquid and stir until it is smooth (about 5 minutes). Add some beef broth if you like (you can also use water if you don’t have any). Stir until it is smooth again (about 5 minutes) and then cook for an additional 2 minutes. You can also let it cook in the saucepan over low heat for about 15 minutes.

-Add your beef back to the skillet. Pour in half of your gravy (making sure there are no clumps left in the gravy) and mix it into the beef with a wooden spoon or spatula. Add more gravy until your mixture is nice and thick (5 more minutes). Turn off the heat source, cover, and set aside.
