Chocolate Cake Icing

Chocolate cake is difficult to resist and difficult to make. This recipe uses a combination of cocoa, powdered sugar, flour, vanilla extract, and milk to create a thick cake icing that's delicious enough for the best bakeries in town. The icing will firm up slightly when chilled in the refrigerator and can be decorated with any sprinkles you like.

Chocolate Cake Icing

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

1/4 cup cocoa powder

1 cup powdered sugar (scant 2 ounces)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour (approx. 13 ounces)

Suggested Flavors: Aged Cacao Powder, Cocoa Powder, Hazelnut Cocoa Powder or Natural Cocoa Powder, Cinnamon and Vanilla Extracts

First off make the icing by beating the butter with a mixer until smooth and fluffy. Add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, powdered sugar, and flour. Beat until smooth.

Decorating a cake is as simple as spreading the icing out over the top of the cake and smoothing it out with a spatula or butter knife. Decorate with your favorite sprinkles!

Don't let this recipe for chocolate icing intimidate you! It really is easy enough for anyone to make at home, even if you have never cooked anything from scratch before! You can make this one of two ways: by hand or in a standing mixer. If you choose to make it by hand, use an electric mixer for beating butter into the dry ingredients. Remember that making any icing requires patience and attention to detail. You cannot rush and expect it to come out right! The entire process of making frosting should take about twenty minutes. Enjoy the results!
