Apple crisps are a delicious autumnal dessert with incredible versatility. The ingredients are simple with the most difficult part being that you need fresh apples. The best recipes use butter, sugar, cinnamon, oats, and all-purpose flour too.

Perfect Apple Crisp

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

3 cups peeled and sliced apples (2 to 3 large)

4 Tablespoons sugar

1 1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt (for topping only)

Cinnamon sugar, optional topping

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 tsp cinnamon Topping

1/2 cup butter

3 Tablespoons brown sugar

2 Tablespoons cinnamon

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 eggs, beaten.

Preparations

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13-inch glass or ceramic baking dish or 8-inch square pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons cinnamon. Toss to coat apples with the sugar mixture. Pour into prepared baking dish and set aside. For the topping: In a small bowl, combine butter and brown sugar; mix well. Stir in cinnamon and vanilla extract until smooth. Drop by teaspoonful on top of the apple mixture. For each drop, sprinkle lightly with 1/4 teaspoon of the flour-baking soda-baking powder-salt mixture from above (each drop = 1/4 teaspoon). (If you're using cinnamon sugar for topping instead of regular granulated sugar and cinnamon, sprinkle with that mixture.) Place in oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown on top. Remove from oven, let stand 10 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
